That Hits The Spot!

Providing enrichment is a common requirement across animal welfare programs. The challenge is knowing what should count as enrichment. A wooden stick? A chain?

The most common form of enrichment for dairy cattle is brushes. After spending time with farmers on our baleage and nursery feeder projects, we were kinda curious if pigs would like brushes too.

Here is what we have learned so far.

The Goal:

Provide Enrichment That Pigs Truly Enjoy

Funding provided: $9,800

Animal lives improved each year: TBD

We know that humans, dogs and even cows enjoy a good scratch. What about pigs?

The Outcomes:

Everyone but the pigs are surprised!

When we first brought up the idea of brushes for sows, we had lots of questions, some folks telling us it just wouldn’t work and might even be a food safety issue. We wanted to get this right so we decided to take it one farm at a time so we can answer some important questions first.

What Farmers Are Saying

“After watching my sows, I don’t think brushes are just enrichment, like a toy, they value them it is resource we need to provide.”
