Satiated Sows
Did you know pigs are natural foragers and will spend up to 70% of their time rooting? Kinder Ground partnered with a pig farmer curious about a solution to weed management of his organic crops that would could benefit his sows.

The Goal:
Freedom to Forage
Funding provided: $2,500
The primary goal was to test the feasibility of using alfalfa hay cuttings to create baleage offered as an additional feed source that will allow sows to express their natural behavior while making sure they maintain healthy condition and it doesn’t result in competitive aggressive behavior.
The Outcomes:
Less is More
The baleage feeding trial began in early July, 2024 and is continuing. The previously fed grain diet was reduced 20% in volume and 3% in protein. Production values remain identical to previous values on the straight grain diet and the sows appear more content.
What Farmers Are Saying
“It is easy to forget that it is not just the animals that spend their time in the barn…The sows seem more content and the farmer says he is too.”
- Dr. Blackwell, Project Champion Ontario

You know something must be working when everyone is smiling! Pigs have learned the shared resource is abundant and the project team has enjoyed seeing the pigs get their fill.
