Satiated Sows

Did you know pigs are natural foragers and will spend up to 70% of their time rooting? Kinder Ground partnered with a pig farmer curious about a solution to weed management of his organic crops that would benefit his farm of 350 sows.

The Goal:

Freedom to Forage

Funding provided: $2,500

Animal lives improved each year: 350

The primary goal was to test the feasibility of using alfalfa hay cuttings to create baleage offered as an additional feed source that will allow sows to express their natural behavior while making sure they maintain healthy condition and it doesn’t result in competitive aggressive behavior.

The Outcomes:

Less is More

This trial demonstrated that under the conditions of this study, feeding free choice baleage to gestating sows provided a valued resource and was able to replace 20% of the energy and 39% of the protein normally supplied by the farm’s corn and soybean-based gestation diet without any adverse effects on sow health or productivity.

What Farmers Are Saying

“The sows seem happier since the baleage feeding began and so am I.”
